The fascination with gemstones is the result of a unique combination of beauty, rarity, history, symbolism and science. In this practical experience available to the general public, natural coloured gemstones and ornamental stones are observed and identified using simple gemologist's tools and curiosities about the origin and use of these stones today are revealed.

Explore the fascinating world of untreated natural colour gemstones, with a focus on identification and knowledge of quality factors.
Observation of stones, using gemologist's tools, applying the knowledge acquired.

1. Overview of gemology in the context of jewellery and coloured stones in particular

2. Quality factors in coloured stones:

   • Colur

   • Clarity

   • Cut

   • Transparency

   • Geographical origin

   • Carat weight (size)

   • Optical phenomena

3. Presentation of the equipment used to identify stones

4. Identifying and observing stones:

   • Corundum family: ruby and sapphire

   • Beryl family: emerald, aquamarine and morganite

   • Quartz family: amethyst and citrine

   • Tourmaline

   • Spinel

   • Opal
